The Labrador Retriever ... a unique and versatile dog
Very agile, steady and tenacious, endowed with a remarkably good nose, the Labrador is the king of Retrievers. He is capable of retrieving all kinds of game on land as well as in water. Very well balanced, his nature makes him a very agreeable companion dog. Eager and docile, he has a good character and asks only to please. His education however requires firmness and gentleness.
A unique coat structure. The Labrador?s coat belongs in the strong short hair category. The dense thick coat helps resist the cold and water. In fact, the Labrador produces more sebum than other breeds, which also helps to make the hair more waterproof. A sturdy body and strong bone structure. Whether working or simply out on a walk with its owners, it shows eagerness and enthusiasm, which can put a lot of pressure on its joints. Lesions of the cruciate ligaments are not unusual in this active dog. It is therefore essential to use nutrition to help counteract articular problems as well associated inflammatory mechanisms.
A natural tendency to put on weight. Probably inherited from its Nordic ancestors which needed plenty of calories for diving into the frozen waters of the Atlantic, the Labrador?s appetite is legendary?
The Labrador has a body structure with less in the way of muscles and more in the way of fat than other dogs. Its natural greed combined with a certain laziness obviously exposes it to a high risk of obesity.
